Northern Kentucky University opens its campus as part of President Ashish Vaidya’s Inauguration Week celebrations. Ten classes in a variety of subjects will be open to anyone who would like to attend on March 26 and 27.
NKU is in the process of unveiling the Success by Design strategic framework. It focuses on advancing student success aligned with the needs of the region.
“A lot of our framework conversations centered on the three pillars of access, completion and career and community engagement. What keeps people from completing their degrees, and what can we do to get them on campus? One way is to expose the community to the great work of our faculty,” said President Vaidya. “We hope to remove barriers, so potential students have a clearer path to complete their degrees, earn a credential or just learn about an interesting subject for a day.”
The Inauguration Week Open Classes list includes:
March 26, 2019
*PHI 360 Environmental Philosophy | 9:25-10:40 a.m. | This course takes an in-depth examination of epistemological, ethical and social questions concerning humanity’s relationship with nature.
*JUS 231 Race, Gender, Crime | 10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m. | Students will learn about race and gender issues related to criminality, victimization, prosecution, adjudication, sanctions and employment within the legal system.
*NRS 250 Beginning Medical Surgical Nursing |11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. | This class introduces concepts and theories needed to support adaptation of clients requiring multiple nursing interventions for health maintenance.
*ENTP 202 Opportunity Recognition | 12:15- 1:30 p.m. | Students will explore ways to shape and evaluate opportunities by understanding key industry, market and competitive factors. They learn how to determine if an idea is a viable opportunity for value creation, how to apply critical thinking skills and how best to seize the opportunities they have identified.
*ANT 231 Modern American Indians | 1-40-2:55 p.m. | This course focuses on current problems faced by Indian populations in North America; the history of Indian-white and Indian-black relations; and the relations to federal government.

*ST 115 Stars, Galaxies, & Cosmology | 9-9:50 a.m. | Students study the structure, dynamics, origin and evolution of stars, galaxies and the universe within a framework of scientific methodology; Knowledge of elementary algebra is helpful.
*EMB 140 Media Aesthetics | 11-11:50 a.m. | This class introduces the aesthetics and basic technologies of creating audio, video and interactive media. It’s described as a course grounded in theoretical concepts with practical application.
*HIS 336 Modern Africa | 1- 1:50 p.m. | Students examine African History from the transatlantic slave trade to the current era. The course stresses the historical roots of current African conditions via an understanding of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism and African cultural, economic and political traditions.
*ECO 200 Principles of Macroeconomics | 2-3:15 p.m. | This class introduces the concepts of macroeconomics; national income and employment; economic growth, business cycles and inflation; economic role of government; role of money and banking system; and international trade.
*ARTC 341 Ceramic Sculpture | 3:15-5:55 p.m. | Students work with clay as a sculptural medium. They learn fabrication techniques, clay body formulation and surfaces, as well as engineering, installation and assembly.
Guests can park in the Welcome Center Garage, and an NKU representative will escort them to the classroom. They are asked to arrive 30 minutes before the class starts to allow time to park and walk to the building. Those interested in attending an open class need to complete an online form.
Inauguration Week festivities culminate with the Investiture Ceremony on March 29 when President Vaidya is sworn in as NKU’s sixth president. For details on Inauguration Week events, visit its website.
