Northern Kentucky University is partnering with the Cincinnati Museum Center and the Kentucky Science Center to host the Inaugural High School STEM+H Day today. The event is expected to bring more than 300 students to NKU’s campus.

STEM+H includes an emphasis on Health with STEM’s focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students will get hands-on demonstrations, team-building challenges, and unique learning opportunities directly from STEM+H professionals, like the event’s keynote speaker, Wendy Rice, Africa Head Zookeeper and Fiona’s caretaker at the Cincinnati Zoo.
“Everyone knows Fiona, but they may not realize the breadth of STEM+H disciplines that are involved with caring for her. Wendy Rice will share stories that give a behind the scenes look at the phenomenon that is Fiona,” said Dr. Madhura Kulkarni, Director of NKU’s Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM). “We want the day filled with events and experiences that showcase the many aspects of STEM+H careers.”
CINSAM, along with NKU’s Institute of Health Innovation and the College of Education and Human Services’ Department of Teacher Education, collaborated with external partners, the Cincinnati Museum Center and the Kentucky Science Center, to create this first-of-its-kind event.
“Through our Early Childhood Science Inquiry Teacher Education (ECSITE) and Learning Through Play programs introducing science experiences to preschool children, our STEM Girls initiative aimed at girls ages seven to 14, and our Youth Program teen volunteers ages 13 to 18, Cincinnati Museum Center is dedicated to inspiring children and adults of all ages to learn more about their world through science,” said Tony Lawson, Cincinnati Museum Center. “We are excited to collaborate with Northern Kentucky University to introduce high school students to the wide variety of STEM careers available to them at this event.”
“Kentucky Science Center is thrilled to bring our “Do Science” philosophy to HS STEM+H Day and the students of Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati,” said Andrew Spence, Kentucky Science Center. “We know that teens respond well to high-content lab sessions and rapid-fire speed mentoring opportunities as they seek to discover new STEM paths or reinforce their existing interests. This initiative to bring hundreds of students to NKU not only strengthens our institutional partnerships, but also the developing workforce for the region and beyond.”
