Kentucky Lottery sales dip slightly in first quarter; current Powerball and Mega Millions runs closing gap

In the meeting of the Kentucky Lottery Board of Directors, it was announced that first quarter sales for FY19 (July 1 thru Sept. 30) dipped 2 percent compared to the previous year.

Overall sales for the period were $250.6 million, which is $5.2 million less than the same period in FY18. According to Vice President and Corporate Controller Maggie Garrison, Powerball was the big culprit.

“That game was really an outlier, dropping 47.1 percent or $12.1 million alone,” she said. “This is due primarily to a nice Powerball run that was ongoing during that period last year. However, we’re currently in very healthy jackpot runs in both the Powerball and Mega Millions games, so we will close that gap.”

The lottery’s largest-selling product line – scratch-off tickets – rose $3 million (2.1 percent) in the same period to $148.2 million.

In other business, the board approved:

• A two-year extension with IGT Global Solutions Corp. for secondary Scratch-off production and related services;

• Compensation for President and CEO Tom Delacenserie, including a 6 percent salary increase, a lump sum incentive bonus of 10 percent of base salary for FY18, and performance metrics for FY19;

• A memorandum of agreement with Kentucky State Police for assistance with ticket integrity testing;

• Funding for the third year of a contract with The Buntin Group for advertising and related services for digital media, and;

• Rules and regulations for nine scratch-off tickets, three Instant Play tickets, and updated rules and regulations for the Powerball, Mega Millions and Keno games.

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be Dec. 14. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m., and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. The audit committee meeting will begin at 8 a.m., as well as the procurement committee at 9 a.m.
