Thomas More College will induct nine into its Athletic Hall of Fame 2016 class, including St. Elizabeth Healthcare CEO Garren Colvin who was a baseball standout.
The inductees are: Billy Arthur ’93, Pat Berndsen ’08, Mark Carlisle ’07, Garren Colvin ’86, Stephanie (Frondorf) Perkins ’06, Dustin Hicks ’98, Andy Kulina ’87, Brooke Warner ’07 and Laura Wiegele ’06.
The 1992 and 1993 volleyball teams will also be honored as Teams of Distinction.
The inductees will be recognized in a ceremony on the Thomas More campus. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. and dinner and the induction ceremony will follow at 7 p.m. Tickets for the ceremony are $25 and are available at thomasmore.edu/HOF or by calling (859) 344-3346 by Feb. 13.
The inductees are:
Billy Arthur ’93 (Men’s Basketball)
Arthur played basketball from 1989-93 and ranks in the top 20 in numerous school records.
He is the all-time assist leader with 223 and ranks seventh in career three-point field goals made with 107, eighth in three-pointers attempted with 304 and 20th in scoring with 1,112 points. Arthur ranks in the top-five of five single-season records as he is first, second and 10th in steals with 99, 72 and 52, third in assists with 151 and 10th in three-point field goals with 44. He also played three-years of baseball at Thomas More.
Pat Berndsen ’08 (Baseball)
Berndsen was a two-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) selection playing baseball at Thomas More. He holds the Thomas More career record for games started with 43 and innings pitched with 262.1 innings. Berndsen also ranked in the top-10 in six other career pitching categories. He is second in strikeouts with 207, fourth in complete games with 15 and wins with 22, seventh in appearances with 46 and 10th in earned run average at 3.75 and shutouts with one. He also holds the single-season record for complete games with nine, while he is third in games started in a season with 12 and innings pitched in a season at 80.2. At the plate, Berndsen had 19 career doubles, three triples, four home runs and 58 runs batted-in.
Mark Carlisle ’07 (Football)
Carlisle played linebacker for the Saints from 2003-2006. He was a first team All-PAC selection was the first Thomas More football player to be named PAC Most Valuable Player in 2006. Carlisle holds the Thomas More career record for tackles with 445 as he had 147 tackles in 2005, 125 in 2006, 124 in 2004 and 49 in 2003. He was named to the PAC 60-year anniversary team in 2014 and had 42.5 career tackles for a loss.
Garren Colvin ’86 (Baseball)
Colvin was a four-year pitcher/outfielder for Thomas More from 1983-1986. On the mound he did not lose a game until his junior season and was named All-NAIA as a senior. Colvin was named the team MVP his senior season as he led the team in runs batted-in with 25, had the lowest earned run average on the team at 2.75 and received the captain’s plaque. During his junior and senior campaigns he was 97-of-228 at the plate and had 73 strikeouts in 119 innings pitched. Colvin is currently the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of St. Elizabeth Healthcare.
Stephanie (Frondorf) Perkins ’06 (Softball)
Perkins excelled on the Thomas More softball diamond from 2002-2006. She was a second team All-PAC selection in 2006 and hold the school record for career triples with 10. Perkins currently ranks in the top-10 in seven other career batting categories as she is third in batting average at .375, fourth in doubles with 32, fifth in stolen bases at 39, sixth in runs scored with 109, seventh in runs batted-in with 83, ninth in hits with 149 and 10th in home runs with seven. She holds the single-season record in triples with five.
Dustin Hicks ’98 (Football)
Hicks set numerous passing records at Thomas More as he played quarterback from 1995-1998. He currently holds the career record for pass attempts with 858 and the single season records for pass attempts with 293 and completions with 155. Prior to this season, Hicks held the career record for passing yardage with 5,475 and career completions with 442. The career passing yard and completions records stood for 16 seasons. He is tied for most passing touchdowns in a game with four and is second in single game completions with 26 and attempts in a game with 51.
Andy Kulina ’87 (Men’s Tennis)
Kulina was a four-year letter winner on the tennis court for Thomas More from 1983-1987. He was the captain of the 1987 team that recorded the fest final national ranking in program history as it was ranked 23rd. As a senior Kulina was as named Academic All-America and was the KIAC champion at sixth singles and District 32 honorable mention with a 14-6 record, including three wins against Division I opponents as he was a national tournament qualifier and participant. During his playing career, Thomas More won four KIAC championships and three NAIA District championships.
He coached the team part-time as a senior and continued to coach the team for three years following graduation. Kulina currently lives in England and is attempting to raise money for various special needs charities that support his daughter who has a rare chromosome deletion.
Brooke Warner ’07 (Women’s Basketball)
Warner was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team from 2002-2006. She was a two-time All-PAC selection as she was first team in 2005-06 and second team in 2006-07. Warner was a member of the 2005-06 team that began the program’s current 10-year streak as PAC regular season champs and the 2006-07 team that won the first PAC tournament title during the current streak of nine-straight, as well of an NCAA tournament participant in during the 2003-04 campaign and 2006-07 campaign. She ranks in the top-10 in two Thomas More career categories as she is sixth in assists with 303 and rebounds with 661, 10th in free-throw attempts with 332 and points 1,091.
Laura Wiegele ’06 (Volleyball)
Wiegele was a defensive specialist for the Thomas More volleyball team from 2001-2005. She was named first team All-PAC and the PAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2005 during the College’s first year as members of the conference. Wiegel holds the programs career record for games played with 534 and digs with 3,259. She also owns the top three spots on the College’s single-season record for digs with 953, 882 and 879.
Teams of Distinction 1992 and 1993 Volleyball
The 1992 and 1993 Thomas More volleyball teams were the first two teams advance to the Final Eight of an NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Both teams were coached by Darrel McLean.
The 1992 team posted a 30-13 record for a .697 winning percentage and the 1993 team followed that up with a 41-9 record for a .820 win percentage. Both teams won the Association of Mideast Colleges Conference (AMCC), in which Thomas More competed during the early 1990’s.
