Behringer-Crawford Museum starts your summer off right — camps, concerts, sea turtles, hot air balloons


Behringer-Crawform Museum is providing a lot to do as summer starts — from concerts to camps to sea turtles to hot air balloons and more. Start planning your summer with these activities in June:

Active-duty military personnel and their families can enjoy free admission to Behringer-Crawford Museum this summer as part of the Blue Star Museums program. The 2021 program, which runs through Sunday, September 5, is available for those currently serving in the United States military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard as well as members of the reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card.

Chippie’s Sensational Science Labs: Sea Turtles and the Oceans
Did you know that some species of sea turtles live as long as 150 years? Preschoolers will learn more fascinating facts about these endangered denizens of the deep in this hands-on, S.T.E.A.M.-based workshop for preschoolers aged 3-5, offered both live at the museum and streaming on Zoom.

Admission to both in-person and virtual sessions is free for BCM members. For future members, the in-person cost is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors 60+ and $5 for children. Cost for the virtual session is $5 per non-member household. There is a $3 lab fee per child for members and non- members for both in- person and virtual sessions. Participation in the in-person session is limited to 10 people.

Registration is required at least 7 days in advance to allow time for supply pickup for virtual participants. Call Kim or Samantha at 859-491-4003. Masks are required for the in-person session. A Zoom link to the virtual session will be sent after registration and materials can be picked at the museum in advance. For those who prefer to get their own supplies, the lab fee is waived, and a list will be sent with the Zoom link.

Tot Tuesdays! Hot Air Balloons

My beautiful, my beautiful balloon . . .

Children aged 3 to 5 will learn about these magnificent sky-soarers through stories and crafts in this monthly workshop designed to help prepare preschoolers for reading readiness and socialization. Music @BCM Concert: Steve Bonafel, Jesse Lynn and the TNT Express

Northern Kentucky bluegrass and country singer/songwriter Steve Bonafel, who performs original songs based on the history of the region, will be accompanied by multiple award-winning Nashville recording artist Jesse Lynn and the TNT Express. The family-friendly performance takes place in Behringer-Crawford Museum’s amphitheater at 1600 Montague Road-Devou Park, Covington. In the event of rain, the music moves indoors.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the performance running from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and Free for children ages 3-12. Adult beverages are available for purchase. Parking is free.

Chippie’s Summer Camp-in-a-Box: Museum Mysteries

Chippie’s Summer Camp-in-a-Box is three days of summer fun which will take kids on virtual trips through Kentucky’s Ice Age, exploring rocks and crystal formations and floating down the Ohio River while solving a mystery from home each day.

Campers will receive a treasure chest packed with activities, videos, craft supplies and instructions for each day’s mystery, along with a Zoom link which will let them confer with BCM staff counselors. In addition, some adult supervision may be needed at home.

Cost for Chippie’s Summer Camp-in-a-Box is $30 per child for museum members and $40 per child for nonmembers. To register, contact Kim or Samantha at 859-491-4003 or by email at education@bcmuseum.org.

Registration deadline: 3:30 p.m., Friday, June 11. Camp materials may be picked up during museum hours at 1600 Montague Drive, Covington, between Friday, June 18 and Sunday, June 20.

Music @BCM Concert: Burning Caravan

Burning Caravan, a Cincinnati-based, four-piece instrumental and vocal ensemble, returns to Music@BCM with an evening of gypsy jazz, swing and American roots music.

The family-friendly performance takes place in Behringer-Crawford Museum’s amphitheater at 1600 Montague Road-Devou Park, Covington. In the event of rain, the music moves indoors.
