“I just wanted to make sure they got something to start their day off right,” said Everett, who has been teaching for 20 years. “I just want them to know that they are loved.”

Everett recruited other teachers and staff to help her. The volunteers greeted students as they come through the doors.

Everett, a

special education teacher, declares random “Free Hug Days” throughout the year. And she always makes sure one of those days is Valentine’s Day.

This year she gave out Hershey’s Kisses as well as hugs.

She came up with the Free Hug Day about 13 years ago while she was on hall duty. She said some of the students seemed sad as they entered the school.

“I just started giving hugs and everybody liked it,” she said.
