A Petersburg couple was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on KY 18, (Burlington Pike) in Burlington Tuesday.

James and Cheyenne Harrison were traveling westbound on Burlington Pike, about three miles west of Jefferson Street, when they swerved to avoid stopped traffic, according to a statement from the Boone County Sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s office investigators have not yet determined who was driving the Kia Sedona minivan the couple was in. The report indicates it struck a red, 2016 Honda Civic driven by Kristin Wallace, 54, of Florence and crossed the double-yellow line into the eastbound lane.

Wallace sustained non-life threatening injuries.

A Freighliner dump truck heading eastbound on Burlington Pike, struck the Sedona head-on, according to the statement, causing both of the vehicles to overturn in the roadway.

The driver of the dump truck, Bernard Vaske, 46, of Burlington, also sustained non-life threatening injuries.

James Harrison was 31 and his wife, Cheyenne, was 30. Next of kin has been notified.

The roadway was shut down for approximately four hours.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office released the following statement, and an update, regarding the accident:

On Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at approximately 11:33 am, Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 4300 block of Burlington Pike (KY-18) for a reported accident with extrication involving two (2) passenger cars and a dump truck.

One passenger car contained two (2) trapped passengers, a male and a female. The male was pronounced deceased on scene. The female passenger was extricated from the vehicle, but was later pronounced deceased before being transported to the hospital.

The sole occupant of the other passenger car was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence after sustaining non-life threatening injuries. The sole occupant of the dump truck also sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the collision. As of now, deputies are currently working on notifying next of kin. Upon notification, more details about this fatal collision will be released.

Update: Deputies have cleared the scene at the 4300 block of Burlington Pike.

The deceased have been identified as a husband and wife from Petersburg, KY. The next of kin for the male, James Harrison, 31, and his wife, Cheyenne Harrison, 30, have been notified. They were operating a blue, 2005 Kia Sedona minivan.

The driver of a red, 2016 Honda Civic has been identified as Kristin Wallace, 54, Florence. Wallace sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of a yellow, 2000 Freightliner dump truck has been identified as Bernard Vaske, 46, Burlington. Vaske sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Preliminary indications suggest that Wallace was traveling in the Honda Civic, westbound on Burlington Pike behind an uninvolved SUV.

The SUV slowed to make a right hand turn into a nearby driveway which caused Wallace to also slow her speeds on the roadway. The Kia Sedona, operated by either James or Cheyenne Harrison, approached the rear of the Honda Civic at an unknown speed.

It’s believed that one of the Harrisons attempted to avoid a collision with the rear of Wallace’s vehicle, but was unable to. The Kia Sedona struck the rear, driver’s side bumper of the Honda Civic as the Sedona crossed the double yellow line into the eastbound lane of Burlington Pike.

The Freightliner dump truck was traveling eastbound on Burlington Pike and struck the Sedona head on. The impact caused the dump truck and Sedona to overturn on the roadway. The Harrisons had to be extricated from their vehicle and were pronounced deceased on the scene.

The roadway was shut down for approximately four (4) hours Tuesday afternoon and has since been reopened. Investigators haven’t determined yet who was driving the Kia Sedona.
