Ohio medical marijuana program launches with opening of CY+ dispensary in Wintersville

As Kentucky lawmakers consider legislation that might someday allow for the use of medical marijuana in the Commonwealth, the first facility to dispense it opened in Ohio Wednesday.

Chicago-based Cresco Labs announced Wednesday that its CY+ Dispensary (pronounced see-why-plus) welcomed patients and conducted the first legal sale of medical marijuana in Ohio today under the state’s new medical marijuana program.

Physician-certified patients from across the state lined up to gain access to medical marijuana for symptoms of 21 approved medical conditions including HIV, epilepsy, glaucoma, and Parkinson’s disease.

“I started using medical marijuana five years ago to deal with the pain and sleep issues from my multiple sclerosis and I’m so happy I can stop living in the shadows of the black market and purchase my medicine legally,” said Joan Caleodis, a retired government worker. “The launch of this program gives me easier access and the ability to do things the right way.”

The dispensary opened with nearly 30-strain selections of flower products from three operational growers in the state but will eventually carry a full suite of products including flower, edibles, vape pens/cartridges, oral sprays, pills, and transdermal patches.

Patients can purchase pre-packaged 2.83-gram drams of dried flower product used for vaporization in up to a 90-day supply.

The CY+ dispensary also has staff on hand to help educate patients about using marijuana as medicine.

Using private one-on-one consultation areas, patients will feel comfortable discussing their symptoms and exploring the appropriate marijuana products in a safe space. The dispensary’s staff is trained and educated by national medical experts and will help guide patients in their choice of strain and usage method to most appropriately treat their symptoms.

“We are proud to be the first dispensary to serve the patients of Ohio and look forward to educating the patient and medical community that relief has arrived,” said CY+ manager Ashley Miller. “Part of our mission is to normalize the cannabis industry and we’ve created an environment for patients as welcoming as their local pharmacy.”

Cresco Labs, one of the largest vertically integrated multistate cannabis operators in the United States, also operates a state-of-the-art cultivation facility in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
