Holmes riding four-game win streak into showdown with Scott that could decide district champion

The Holmes football team that started the season with four consecutive losses is one win away from claiming a Class 4A district title.

The Bulldogs take a 3-0 district record into Friday’s game at Scott. If they win, they’ll finish on top in the standings and host a first-round playoff game for the first time since 2010.

Senior quarterback James Walker has led Holmes to four straight wins.

A shoulder injury sidelined Holmes senior quarterback James Walker during the team’s 0-4 start. With him back in lineup, the Bulldogs have won four in a row to even their record.

During the four-game winning streak, Walker passed for 511 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 167 yards and five TDs. He clearly adds another dimension to the team’s offense that was averaging less than 150 yards per game without him.

The first order of business for the Holmes defense in Friday’s game will be containing Scott running back Quincy Perrin, who has rushed to 795 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. In his team’s 34-28 win over Bourbon County last week, Perrin picked up 119 yards on 21 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns.

The other local teams that need a win on Friday to finish on top in district standings are Newport Central Catholic, Walton-Verona, Covington Catholic and Conner. Two teams — Beechwood and Simon Kenton — have already clinched district titles and home field advantage in the opening round of the state playoffs on Nov. 2.
