Every movie you watch or song you listen to exist because someone was passionate about their art form.
Boone County Public Library is celebrating the arts in our local community through Arts Appreciation Day on Sunday, September 23 from 2-4 p.m. at Boone County Public Library, Main Library, located at 1786 Burlington Pike in Burlington. Dance, theatre, music, visual art, and writing organizations will all be providing demonstrations and interactive performances free for all ages, from children to adults.

Throughout the afternoon, local artist Parrish Monk will lead participants through the creative process of upcycling something old into something new using old sheet music. Parrish uses the contents of the page as a jumping off point for inspiration and allows it to guide the images that are created. Participants will have a chance to create their own masterpiece using sheet music and paint. Monk has received numerous grants and awards and has had his work featured in variety of publications and galleries across Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, and South Carolina. Monk’s work has been sold to T.V. shows like HBO’s Enlightened, Hawaii Five 0, and Stars as well as to public spaces from New York to Miami to Dallas to L.A.
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at 2 p.m. Founded in 1895, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest orchestras in the United States. Under the direction of most recent appointee Louis Langrée, the CSO has toured the world recorded albums, television specials, and founded the groundbreaking new initiative– LUMENOCITY, One City, One Symphony. In addition to their concerts at Music Hall, they are the official orchestra of both the Cincinnati Ballet and Cincinnati Opera. They perform Young People’s Concerts, Lollipops Family Concerts, and can be seen performing throughout the community. We are pleased to host an ensemble for the second time here at our Main library. The selected quintet will be playing Interlude for Oboe and Strings by 20th Century British composer Gerald Finzi, as well as various other selections.
Cincinnati Opera at 2:30 p.m. From humble beginnings in 1920 performing at the Cincinnati Zoo, to hosting such opera greats as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, it’s safe to say that the country’s second oldest opera company has grown by leaps and bounds. Now housed at the beautifully renovated Music Hall, the Cincinnati Opera has even been nominated for the prestigious International Opera Award. In addition to their performance of classic works, such as The Magic Flute and La Boehme, the company is engaged in staging new works, as they did most recently with Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Their outreach programs include initiatives that take them to churches and community centers throughout the area, and their impressive Opera Express truck has been known to pop up for performances in unexpected places. This is our first time hosting the Cincinnati Opera here at the library for a performance and we could not be more excited. Soprano Nicollette Book and accompanist Stephen Variames will perform three selections under the dome featuring our antique piano.

Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati at 3:30 p.m. A staple of the community in historic Over-the-Rhine, a “professional theatre dedicated to producing world and regional premieres of works that often explore compelling social issues.” The professional theatre company works to fulfil their mission through their mainstage productions as well as educational outreach programs. BCPL is excited to host Ensemble for their first program here in Boone County. For Arts Day, ETC will be bringing their Hunter Heartbeat Program, focused on Shakespeare’s works. While specifically designed for individuals with special needs, all are welcome to participate in this unique program of sensory games.
Northern Kentucky University Dance Program at 3 p.m. The Northern Kentucky University School of the Arts Dance Troupe will be performing two short pieces from their “Take 5 Signature Collection.” After the performance they will lead participants in a short dance movement class that features one of the pieces they just performed.
