Evansville Otters post 8-7 victory over Florence Freedom on Saturday night

David Cronin homered and scored three times Saturday night as the Evansville Otters took advantage of four errors by the Florence Freedom and posted an 8-7 win at UC Health Stadium.

Evansville scored three unearned runs to pull out the road victory. Cronin went 2-for-5 and added two runs batted in for the Otters, who scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 6-all tie.

John Price Jr. homered for Florence, which lost to Evansville for the second straight night, and Skyler Ewing went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. The Freedom’s Caleb Lopes was 2-for-4 and scored twice, while teammate Jordan Brower also added two RBI.

Florence starter Chuck Weaver allowed nine hits and six runs (four earned) in six innings. Evansville scored two runs off reliever Cody Gray in the eighth inning. Gray struck out four batters in 1 2/3 innings on the mound, but he allowed three hits and was charged with the loss.

Reliever Jeff Thompson of Evansville pitched a perfect ninth inning to record the save.

Florence will attempt to salvage the finale of the three-game series Sunday at 2:35 p.m.
