Boone County deputy fires at suspect overnight at gas station in Verona, man still at large

A Boone County Sheriff’s deputy fired a shot at a man police were trying to apprehend at a Verona gas station shortly after 1 a.m. Monday morning.

In a release, the Sheriff’s office reports the man, who has not been identified, began struggling with deputies who attempted to detain him at the Verona Marathon on Verona-Mudlick Road.

Deputies were called to the gas station for the report of a suspicious person in a car for a long period of time. The man fought with deputies as he was attempting to escape custody. A deputy attempted to tase the suspect while another fired a shot, striking the vehicle, a grey Chevrolet Cobalt.

The suspect left the area, but was located in Gallatin County where he fled again. The car was later found unoccupied in a parking lot in Indiana.

The deputy, who has not been identified, is on paid administrative leave, pending completion of an investigation into the incident.

The suspect is still at large.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office released the following statement regarding the incident:

On Monday, March 19, 2018 at approximately 1:15 a.m. a Boone County Sheriff’s deputy fired on a man in a vehicle who had just fought with two deputies and was in the process of driving across the lot of the Verona Marathon located at 2832 Verona-Mudlick Road in Verona, Kentucky.

Deputies were dispatched to the Marathon in response to a suspicious person in a car who had been there for an inordinate amount of time.  After the man was ordered out of the car and being detained he fought with two deputies, pushed them away and got to his car where one of the deputies attempted to utilize a taser on him and as he started forward the other deputy discharged his weapon striking the car.

The suspect, driving a grey Chevrolet Cobalt fled the area only to be found in Gallatin County where he fled again into Indiana.  The Cobalt was found shortly thereafter unoccupied in a parking lot.

The deputy is placed on administrative duty until the investigation into the incident is complete.

    Police will just shoot there weapons at anybody he maybe crazy for fighting the police and all but it don’t mean try to take his life.
