Education Briefs: Vote for EES, NKU-US Bank scholarship, VM teacher honored, TM conference

Vote for EES

Erlanger-Elsmere Schools has been named one of 200 finalists out of 2,000 applicants for the State Farm Insurance’s Neighborhood Assist national grant program. But in order to win, the district needs help… in the form of online votes. Right now, they’re in third pace.

To win, the district needs to amass more than 100,000 votes. Each email address is eligible to vote 10 times per day.

Voting is easy: Go to http://neighborhoodassist.com/entry/1984042 using your computer, tablet or phone. The national voting window runs through November 4.

Ask family, friends, and contacts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for their votes and share this story. If Erlanger/Elsmere Schools grant is chosen, the district’s Early Childhood Education partners stand to win a $25,000 grant to support communication for children.

The district’s public preschool, Head Start, and community childcare providers have worked together to provide more and more children with quality early learning opportunities.

With this grant, the Erlanger-Elsmere School District can more successfully support young children who may have barriers to communication through mobile communication devices such as audio books, speech to text writers, picture communication and sign language apps, etc. We can also provide more hands-on materials, screening tools, and training for staff and parents to address these needs.

NKU, US Bank partnership

A new partnership between Northern Kentucky University and U.S. Bank will expand access to NKU’s nationally-known cybersecurity program and help create the next generation of “good guys” tasked with staying one step ahead of hackers.

NKU and U.S. Bank announced the creation of the U.S. Bank Cybersecurity Scholarship. The award will benefit high-achieving cybersecurity students in NKU’s College of Informatics.

“At U.S. Bank, we want to be our customer’s most trusted choice,” said Jason Witty, U.S. Bank Executive Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer. “One way we earn that trust is by providing the highest level security for our customer’s data which is why investing in cybersecurity is so important to us.”

The inaugural recipients of the scholarship are Allyson Frame, a sophomore Computer Information Technology major; Nathan Long, a sophomore Computer Information Technology major; and Nicholas Mester, a senior Computer Information Technology major. Frame, Long, and Mester are members of NKU’s Cyber Defense Team, which competes with other university teams across the nation in both offensive and defensive security skills.

In January 2015, NKU became the first university in Greater Cincinnati to be designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense (CAE IA/CD) by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security. The designation identifies NKU’s cybersecurity program as a top-tier program in the nation and makes NKU eligible for special research grants and scholarships.

Yuenger’s innovative teaching idea, Full STEAM Ahead, is focused on creating an environment where learning happens in a hands-on motivational way.

Selected from a group of more than 1,350 applicants. Yuenger is one of only 100 winners across the country. She will now compete with other finalists for one of the top three prizes – an additional $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000 from Voya Financial.

Principal Soshana Bosley said, “This grant money allows us to expand our program and instill in our kindergarten through sixth grade students a love of STEAM learning. The faculty will use this money to purchase additional materials that they can use to provide engaging, student-centered activities where their students have the opportunity to question, collaborate, and solve real problems.” The grant will provide new opportunities for students to further explore circuitry, engineering, computer programming, and robotics.
