Health dept. offers special events in observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Public health officials and community partners in Northern Kentucky are working to raise awareness around HIV/AIDS in the African-American community, and reduce the stigma associated with it by hosting a movie night and testing event on Thursday, Feb. 12.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Mary Ann Mongan branch of the Kenton County Public Library, 502 Scott Blvd. in Covington.

It will include a free showing of the movie Temptation by Tyler Perry, a discussion facilitated by experienced sexuality educators, snacks, door prizes, and rapid, oral HIV testing. It is being coordinated with observances of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

In Northern Kentucky, 21 percent of clients in HIV care coordination are African American while African Americans represent only about 3 percent of the population.
