JOHN FLESCH
Covington City Commission

In Covington, “what is old, seems new, and what is new, seems comfortably familiar.” Covington conveys an easy sense of warmth, acceptance, and friendship. It conveys an easy sense of home.

With his wife, Laura (nee Hornbeck), beginning her career at Children’s Hospital, John Flesch became the stay-at-home parent upon the birth of their first child. With two children following, John knows what it is like to raise kids, own a business, and practice law in Covington. He is immersed in his community and its well-being.

John Flesch

Covington is riding the crest of rediscovery and reinvestment. Some involved in this revolution are relatively new to the City, and they are to be commended, for without them, this reimagining, this rejuvenation would occur less rapidly and without the gifts ‘new eyes’ bring to the table. Others that have been around for years, even decades, can remember the days when Covington suffered many ills. Those days are over. We are making Covington the great city it can be. We are winning; we are winning on ideas; we are winning on merit.

I take a collaborative approach to problem-solving and seek holistic solutions that do not lose sight of the long-term. Fiscal responsibility, improving the delivery of basic services, and focusing on stakeholders are tenets of serving the public good.

The right answers for Covington are borne of its many stakeholders. Covington benefits from a diversity of assets—its people, its places, and its institutions provide a tangible energy. We have great strength and opportunity in our vibrant business communities, strong neighborhoods, growing residential base, and exceptional building and housing stock. My prescriptions and hopes for a ‘better Covington for all’ take account of and capitalize on those assets.

Let’s talk about some issues…

Senior Needs: Losing Senior Services of Northern Kentucky left a gap in fulfilling senior needs. Covington must look strongly at filling transportation and dietary needs of its homebound and elderly residents, and cast new developments in the light of serving senior residents.

Latonia—The land of opportunity: Inventory our assets.

1. Strong organizational leadership via the Latonia Business Association and Latonia Community Council.
2. Proximity to three interstate interchanges within 2 miles.
3. Affordable housing stock with many housing options.
4. A range of viable education options.

In order to capitalize on the assets of Latonia, my criteria are 1. cheeks in seats, 2. feet on the streets, and 3. kids in yards. Mixed-use at a redeveloped Latonia Shopping Center can provide for a range of business, commercial, and retail opportunities.

Code Enforcement: Recognizing a strength of Covington is its building and housing stock, Code Enforcement is a mechanism by which we hold property owners accountable. I favor robust enforcement.

Trash Collection: As a home and rental property owner, I am intimately familiar with the Rumpke Contract. The Green Stickers program offers no quantifiable results. Bundle it properly, thereafter, trash is trash, take it away!
Within the contract, the toters are assets of the City. Get them off of our Balance Sheet. In other local municipalities, Rumpke provides the toter built into the price, and the price is close to the same as Covington’s.

Although recently suggested as her priority by a current Commissioner, the City should NOT crack down on the rental of roll-off dumpsters from non-Rumpke companies. From an attorney perspective, the Rumpke-only clause seems unenforceable as an unconstitutional restraint on interstate commerce. The City itself does not rent from Rumpke. Rumpke is 30-50% more expensive than other competitors.

IRS Site: My vision for the IRS site includes four elements. First, imagine breaking the site into quarters. Give one quarter to the Convention Center for expansion. Second, imagine cutting that IRS building into eight sections, stack them on top of one another, add parking and 1st floor retail, viola, the same # of jobs in one-eighth space—now double it…twice the jobs in ¼ the space. Third, take the area west of Johnson, adjacent to the east side of the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge and give it over to public safety. West Covington has insufficient land to build a new appropriately sized firehouse. Build it at Johnson, and bring our water and heavy rescue into it. Finally, take that last 4th and develop multi-use, multi-venue green space. 500-plus new residents within an eight-block area will need a place to recreate.

Covington is a great city. I believe it, I know it. Among the assets that define a great city are the nascent pride of place, the steady improvement and maintenance of infrastructure, and a focus on people. As a Commissioner, I will work with residents, businesses, civic groups and all other stakeholders in the City to make Covington a truly world-class city.

CHARLIE WALTON
Boone County Commissioner, District 3

It has been my honor to serve as YOUR County Commissioner for the past eight years. As an experienced public servant committed to providing the leadership to improve the quality of life for the residents of Boone County, I strongly feel that this election is about continuing the economic prosperity of our county. As a life-long educator, coach, a state legislator, an active member of my church, a father and grandfather, and a concerned citizen, I have come to know the issues that are important to people in our community.

Charlie Walton

I am a strong proponent of the conservative values that continue to make Boone County a place that attracts business development, high paying jobs and provides a high quality of life for our families. I am familiar with the values, aspirations, and struggles of Boone Countians and have consistently taken measures to improve the lives of my fellow citizens. I know the value of listening, working together and most importantly, taking action to solve the problems our community faces.

As YOUR County Commissioner, I have:
 Actively pursued business opportunities that provide quality jobs for Boone County citizens
 Held the line on tax increases and spending
 Established collaborative partnerships and programs to maximize effectiveness and efficiency and minimize cost
 Supported families and neighborhoods to ensure safe, nurturing environments for all citizens of Boone County

I will continue to work to:
 Provide superior law enforcement and EMS to keep your family safe
 Increase efficiencies without cutting County services
 Protect private property rights
 Plan for inevitable growth with a network of superior roads
 Maintain an open door policy
 Secure long-term planning and cost-effective methods for the future of Boone County

I am experienced and will continue leading to ensure that Boone County is a place where businesses thrive, jobs are created, and the voices of the citizens are heard.

I am a true conservative with a proven record and stand for lower taxes, fiscal responsibility, smaller government, family values and personal freedoms. We must continue to deliver first-class services at a price we can all afford and maintain tight controls over county finances so that Boone County remains economically strong—and a desirable place to visit, work and live.

I am a committed and uncompromising Pro-Life and Pro-Family advocate who continues to be endorsed by Northern Kentucky Right to Life. I will continue to use strong conservative principles to guide my decision-making on the Boone County Commission. Believing that the family is the cornerstone of our culture, I will continue to advocate for a strong foundation for the citizens of Boone County by supporting policies that promote strong families and values.

My wife Laurie and I have been married 42 years. We are both retired educators and are proud and thankful to call Boone County home. We have two children: Le Walton Hahn and Josh Walton. We are also the blessed grandparents of Walton, Neva and Graham Hahn and Evangeline Walton.

Please take advantage of the privilege and responsibility you have to ensure that quality leaders are elected to represent you. I encourage you to vote for CHARLIE WALTON on Tuesday, May 22 for continued strong, conservative leadership for Boone County.
