Make your own instrument, add your unique touch to a collaborative collage and learn the art of paper sculpture. These and other fun projects are available in The Kentucky Crafted Market’s Hands-On Activities area, March 3-4 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.
Although The Market annually showcases dozens of the state’s finest visual and craft artists, the Hands-On Activities area allows the public to learn about and make art to share. Five organizations will join the arts council in presenting these fun activities, suitable for kids of all ages.
Staff members from the Kentucky Historical Society will bring the bluegrass music tradition to The Market, giving visitors the opportunity to make their own instruments, practice mixing their own sounds and rhythms and create music videos.
Teaching artists with Louisville Visual Art will help Market visitors contribute their own creativity to a large-scale, collaborative collage. LVA teaching artists will help participants explore topics like color, pattern and texture as they create vibrant works of art.
VSA Kentucky, an organization dedicated to providing inclusive arts and education programs for children, youth and adults with disabilities, will teach squeegee painting, a make-and-take art activity that requires only a few minutes to complete. This method integrates various colors, resulting in an abstract, expressive design.
Staff members from The Explorium of Lexington will help visitors make beautifully colored suncatchers using colored beads placed in a variety of frame choices.
Artists from Frankfort’s Josephine Sculpture Park will introduce Market visitors to the art of sculpture in an accessible way. The paper sculpture project was designed in collaboration with Kentucky Crafted artist Joanne Price, owner of Starpointe Studio, and incorporates elements of printmaking, bookbinding and sculpture.
The Market doors open to the public March 2-4. Hours for The Market are:
• March 2, 5-8 p.m.
• March 3, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• March 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tickets are $10 at the door or $8 purchased online. Seniors, active duty military with identification and state employees with identification will receive a $2 discount at the door. Children 15 and under are admitted free with a paying adult. Tickets for Friday’s hours are $5.
