Harrison County detainee flees Cynthiana Courthouse in shackles, is apprehended in Florence

A Harrison County man who escaped from the Cynthiana Courthouse Monday was apprehended in Florence Tuesday.

Florence Police received a report that Gary Courtney fled the courthouse on foot, despite being handcuffed and shackled at the feet, at around 3 p.m. Monday. He was believed to have been driving a 2001 Ford Ranger taken from a maintenance garage in Cynthiana.

Florence Police conducted a traffic stop on Ewing Boulevard on a vehicle driven by Courtney at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Courtney attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended by police.

A female passenger, Jessica Gault, 26, also fled on foot and was apprehended at a nearby gas station.

In addition to the charges he is facing in Harrison County, Courtney is also charged with Receiving Stolen Property and Fleeing and Evading. Gault is charged with Receiving Stolen Property.

Both were transported to the Boone County Detention Center.

Florence Police issued the following statement regarding the incident:

On 02/20/18 the Florence Police Department received an attempt to locate on an escapee from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department. The individual was in the Harrison County Courthouse in Cynthiana, KY on Monday around 3PM and fled on foot with handcuffs and shackles on. It was also reported that he was possibly in a stolen 2001 Ford Ranger that was taken from a maintenance garage in Cynthiana.

Around 1339 hours Lt. Joe Maier located the vehicle on Ewing Blvd. and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle pulled into the lot of 7711 Ewing Blvd. and the male driver fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit the male was apprehended by Officer Nick Barkley and Officer Alex Ewald inside of a nearby business. A female passenger who also fled on foot was located at the Speedway Gas Station on US42 by Officer Tim Lowe.

The following individual was arrested and transported to the Boone County Detention Center and charged with: Receiving Stolen Property, Fleeing and Evading 2nd , a parole violation warrant , and warrants from Harrison County for Escape, Theft of an Auto, Theft of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Criminal Trespass 2nd and Tampering with Physical Evidence:

The following was the female passenger who was arrested for Receiving Stolen Property and also transported to the Boone County Detention Center:

Jessica Gault, 26 years old, Berry, KY
