Kentucky Nonprofit Network will recognize Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission of Covington; Cyndee Burton of Henderson; and Erica Horn of Lexington at the 15th annual Kentucky Nonprofit Leadership Forum Oct. 25 in Lexington.
Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission of Covington will receive the 2017 Innovative Nonprofit Award, which recognizes an organization that implements inventive, nontraditional programs or methods that effectively meet community needs. The award winner is required to demonstrate creativity and vision in finding unique solutions to those needs.
Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission won for its Lincoln Grant Scholar House – a program striving to break the cycle of generational poverty by providing affordable, safe housing and comprehensive support services for low-income single mothers, fathers and grandparents enrolled in post-secondary education.
The Lincoln Grant Scholar House is located in Covington’s former public school for African-American students, which closed after desegregation in 1965. Despite multiple uses for the building over the years, it sat vacant and deteriorating. The transformed building, which is now listed on the National Register for Historic Places and is designed as an African American Heritage site, serves as the neighborhood catalyst for transforming lives.
Cyndee Burton, administrator of Matthew 25 AIDS Services of Henderson is being awarded the 2017 Distinguished Nonprofit Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership among Kentucky nonprofit chief executives. The award recognizes achievement in the areas of strategic leadership, community building, ethical integrity, innovation, and commitment to strengthening the nonprofit sector.
Burton, a Registered Nurse, started Matthew 25 AIDS Services in 1996 as a group of six volunteers met in a church garage to provide support after four individuals affiliated with the church died of AIDS. She served as the volunteer director until the organization formally incorporated in 1999. A tireless advocate and respected leader, Burton has overseen the growth of the organization, which now provides services to over 500 patients in the Tristate area.
Erica Horn, board chair of GleanKY in Lexington will receive the 2017 Outstanding Board Leadership Award. The award highlights the work of a board leader who is strategic-thinking and works cooperatively to further the mission of an organization and is actively committed to best practices.

Horn’s passion for addressing food waste and hunger led her to join with two others to found GleanKY in 2010. She’s since served as board president and as an all-hands-on-deck volunteer for the organization who gathers and redistributes excess fresh fruits and vegetables to nourish Kentucky’s hungry.
Horn’s commitment to the mission of GleanKY, professional expertise, willingness to embrace nonprofit management best practices and enthusiasm for engaging others has been instrumental in creating a sustainable organization engaged in the fight against hunger. An attorney and CPA, Horn is the Associate Director of Tax Services in the Lexington office of Dean Dorton.
The awards will be presented during the Kentucky Nonprofit Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky, at noon Oct. 25. Registration for the luncheon only are $45 for KNN members and $65 for potential members. Tables of eight are also available for purchase.
The Kentucky Nonprofit Leadership Forum is hosted annually by the Kentucky Nonprofit Network and is the only statewide gathering of Kentucky’s nonprofit leaders. The two-day forum, Oct. 24-25, provides attendees the opportunity to gain the skills needed to effectively lead their organizations.
