Northern Kentucky University’s Office of Student Engagement will host Service on Saturday on September 30. The community service day allows students, faculty and staff the opportunity to give back to the area by taking part in a coordinated effort.
More than 600 students have signed up to participate on Saturday. They will be volunteering around the area at food pantries, crisis shelters and community gardens. Each student is expected to log at least three hours. Overall, NKU is expected to have over 2,000 hours of community service completed on Saturday alone.
“It’s amazing to see students come to together like this. The diverse locations are to get students out of their comfort zones and develop worldly skills,” said Tiffany Mayse, director of student engagement. “Both the community and the students love this event, and it shows the impact that our university is making. It’s exciting to see our students’ passion for volunteering.”
Since 2002, NKU’s Office of Student Engagement has hosted Service on Saturday events. Last year, students logged over 1,000 volunteer hours. Many of the service days are coordinated with holidays and campus events, like Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and NKU’s Homecoming.
“I think everyone has a different reason to volunteer,” said Nick Bliven, volunteer coordinator of student engagement. “It could be to make yourself a more well-rounded person or to get that feeling inside your heart that you are making a difference for your community.”
Volunteers will meet on the first floor of the Student Union. Greek students will meet at 8 a.m., and all other student volunteers meet at 11 a.m. For more information, visit: nku.orgsync.com
