KY school cafeteria manager, ‘down-home chef,’ Jason Smith of Grayson, is new Food Network Star

A school cafeteria cooking manager and caterer from northeastern Kentucky is going to get a new gig.

Jason Smith of Grayson captured the Food Network Star, Season 13 crown on Sunday night.

Show co-hosts Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentis announced Smith as the newest member of the Food Network family, edging out finalists Cory Bahr and Rustin Hamlin in a showdown in New York City.

Smith, 39, describes himself as the down-home chef and he has been cooking most of his life.

He became popular on the show for his bright and shiny outfits and off-the-cuff down-home sayings.

Smith came into the competition with a crown in his hip pocket. The self-taught chef and baker previously competed and won Food Network’s Baking Championship.

Smith was the cafeteria manager at Isonville Elementary in Elliott County when he won the baking competition and $50,000 prize last December.

The baking show featured timed baking challenges centered around the holiday theme where contestants were selected from a pool of 2,900 bakers.

Throughout the competition Smith fascinated judges with his family’s unique recipes including sauerkraut cake and bean pie.

Well Lord honey, butter some buns and smack your lips cause Jason is going to create a new sensation at the Food Network! I too watched him on the holiday baking championship and I was so proud of the way he represented himself and his heritage. I thought he did am amazing job during his entire stint on nfns but I felt a sense of something not psrticularly pleasant from the other cast members and even Bobby Flay during the final moments of the finale. Did anyone else pick up on that? In any event, hope Jason shakes up a whole new show full of his wit warmth and welcoming originality. I’m a huge fan!!!!!

  26. Judy says:

The other finalists were good, too, but I’m so glad that Jason won!! His simple, down home cooking will be loved by those who watch his show and try the recipes. It would be fun to see him as a guest on The Kitchen and see him interact with Geoffry Zacharian.

  27. Cheryl Visger says:

Yes, I noticed that too. I think maybe there is a little arrogance there, or maybe they had to do a second take for some reason. I rooted for Jason from almost the beginning, and I’m excited for his show. I love his creativity and he makes me laugh. I wish Jason the best and I hope he enjoys his new adventure.
