KYTC project updates; new alignment for Newport KY 9 expansion, bridge work on I 71/75 in Kenton County


The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 Office urges motorists to be aware of the following projects underway in Northern Kentucky

KY 9 Expansion – Newport – North Section – Construction continues on a new alignment between 5th Street and the Taylor Southgate Bridge.   On Sunday, June 4, traffic will be switched in two locations of the project and new traffic patterns will be in place by 6 a.m. on Monday morning, June 5th.  Work is weather dependent. Access to Riverboat Row and B.B. Riverboats via Columbia Street flood wall gate will remain open to traffic.

Traffic switch locations:

  1. 5th Street will be closed between the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and Central Ave.  4th Street will be 2-way traffic between the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and Central Ave.  Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto 4th Street from the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, and will turn onto Central Ave to get back to 5th Street.
  2. Traffic at 3rd and York will be switched onto the newly constructed pavement so that construction can be completed on the remainder of the roundabout.  3rd Street will remain closed between Columbia Ave and York St, and York St will remained closed at 3rd St.  Monmouth Street will remain a 2-way traffic between 3rd St and 4th St.  A temporary entrance will be constructed to access the West Newport on the Levee Garage entrance.

KENTON COUNTY

I-71/I-75 Southbound (185 – 188 mile-marker) – A bridge expansion joint replacement project on four interstate bridges along I-71/I-75 southbound in between Dixie Highway Exit 188 and the I-71/I-75/I-275 interchange is schedule for Friday, June 2 at 10 p.m. until Monday, June 5 at 7 a.m.  Starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday morning, one lane will be open from 6 a.m. Saturday to 11 p.m. Sunday, two lanes will be open for traffic.  Then from 11 p.m. Sunday night until 7 a.m. Monday, June 5, one lane will be open so that crews can remove barrier walls in the project area.  That weekend will also require that the Buttermilk Pike southbound Exit 186 and Buttermilk Pike southbound entrance ramp to be closed.  The project will be completed Monday morning, June 5 at 7 a.m.   This weekend work will have major impacts to Southbound travel time. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate Southbound routes while this work is in progress.     Work is weather dependent.

Portion of KY 8 (Mary Ingles Highway) closed for bridge construction The KY 8 bridge over Snag Creek in Bracken County is closed to traffic for construction of a new structure.  This bridge is located near the Foster Dam.

Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for KYTC District 6 said, “The new bridge and approaches will be constructed to current standards that will provide better mobility for the motorists who travel this roadway.”

The new bridge will be 33 feet long with two 12-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders. A closure will be in place through Nov. 1.  Motorists are encourage to use the signed detour taking KY 8 to KY 2228 to KY 9 to KY 1109.

Sunesis Construction Company of West Chester, Ohio was awarded the low bid contract for $2.7 million. The project has a November completion date.
