‘Chalk the Walk’ at Women’s Crisis Center Covington; events set for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Women’s Crisis Center is hosting a Chalk the Walk event on April 11th from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the WCC Covington Outreach Office.

At this event attendees will be encouraged to write messages of hope, support, awareness, and prevention of sexual assault in chalk around Women’s Crisis Center’s Covington office located at 835 Madison Avenue, Covington.

WCC has partnered with A Voice For The Innocent for the Chalk the Walk event.

A Voice For the Innocent will be at the event to provide information about their organization, sexual assault prevention, and education. They will also have cards for all that attend to create “Hope Notes” to share words of hope and encouragement to survivors of sexual-based violence.

All attendees will also be able to design a t-shirt that will be used for the Clothesline Project, which will be showcased at Cincy/NKY Take Back The Night 2017 (April 20th, 6:30 p.m. at Washington Park in Cincinnati).

Join WCC in a day of action and let your voice be heard. Share your chalk designs on social media with the hashtags #ChalkTheWalk2017solidarity and a stronger community.

Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men are victims of sexual assault (Black et al., 2011). We all have a role to play in preventing sexual violence in our community. Our actions, big and small, have a ripple effect on those we teach, guide, and influence. From modeling healthy behavior to addressing inappropriate conduct, everyone can make a difference. Changing beliefs which contribute to sexual violence starts with believing survivors of sexual violence when they share their stories.

You can help by calling out victim-blaming comments or rape jokes if you see them online. Remind those around you that sexual assault is never the victim’s fault. Seemingly small actions like this make a critical impact.

Get engaged this April during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month by joining us in embracing your role in ending sexual assault. In Addition to Chalk the Walk, the following SAAPM events will be taking place during the month of April.

Green Dot Day (April 18th) – Green Dot is a nationally recognized strategy focused on preventing power-based personal violence – sexual violence, partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, bullying, and stalking. The strategy is based around the belief that each one of us holds power as bystanders to actively prevent violence and shape our community norms. Cincy/NKY Take Back the Night March and Candlelight Vigil (April 20th) – 6:30-9:30 p.m., Washington Park (1230 Elm Street), Cincinnati, OH – Take Back the Night seeks to end sexual violence in all its forms. TBTN empowers survivors in the healing process, honors those who have not survived and inspires responsibility in us all.  The goal of TBTN is to create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness events and initiatives.

Denim Day (April 26th) – Wear denim to protest all sexual violence and to remind that no clothing item can cause or is an excuse for sexual assault. Wear your denim to show your support, educate, and raise awareness about sexual assault and rape. You can even host a denim day at work where employees can make a small donation to wear denim to work on this day!
