John Medford: Report from City of Union on stepped-up communications, new director, new web site

I am serving my fourth term as a City Commissioner for the City of Union. I’m proud to serve the city in this capacity. I also work here as well, as a chemistry instructor at Larry A. Ryle High School.

As a Commissioner, one of my duties is to work with our City Communications and chair our Communications Committee. I’d like to tell you a little more about what we have planned in that area in the coming months.

We recently implemented a new website that is more informative than the old website. You can see the site at cityofunionky.org.

Residents will be able to navigate the new website more easily and locate more information than in the past. There is a lot of good information there, and we try to keep it up-to-date and available to everyone. It’s also a good resource to learn events and activities going on in the City of Union. You can look forward to more features and changes to the site in the next few months.

Residents can expect to receive more information on upcoming events than in the past. We have an active Facebook and Twitter account, in addition to the website.

There is also an email list you can subscribe to through the website. You will then receive an email whenever there is an update or important city information.

If you have an event or activity that may be of interest to our city, you can contact our new Communications Coordinator, Melissa Hinkle, and she will be happy to assist you with sharing that information with our residents. In addition, information on what’s happening in Union in terms of our economic development efforts will be shared more frequently than we have done in the past through our website and social media.

Melissa was hired in September and comes to the city with a vast range of experience in the communications field. She will also be tasked with coordinating and growing our City events. Some of those events include our annual Celebrate America Fireworks Display in July, Breakfast with Santa in December and our annual Easter Egg Hunt. She lives in the Union area and is excited to grow our community and meet with our residents. If you have an idea for an event or activity, I’m sure she would love to hear from you. Her email address is melissah@cityofunionky.org.

There will be some new, very visible physical changes for communication that will be coming to the city in the form of new signage on Mt. Zion, Gunpowder and at the Old Union road intersection. The city will be installing new, modern signage indicating the city limits as well as providing advertisement for local businesses. We are also researching digital signs that can be a method for providing up to date information to residents. The signs will be phased in the various locations in order to defray overall costs, therefore residents will not see all the signs installed at once.

I know that citizens like to be informed about those individuals who serve them in an elected capacity. Most of the information that the residents would want to know about the Mayor and the Commissioners is already located on the City’s web site. The site also has contact information for each of us, and we welcome you to contact us with any questions or concerns you have about the City.
Long term, the goal is more open and consistent communication with the residents. The more information we can provide via social media and web site development, the more residents will appreciate all the city is doing to enhance their residence in Union.

I remind you all to be a part of the process, and vote on November 8!
