Covington Business Council releases legislative agenda, announces election forums for city races

The Covington Business Council has released its 2016 legislative agenda in advance of two upcoming election forums it will hold separately for the Mayoral and City Commission races.

The major tenants the CBC supports/has an interest are:

The formation of a business improvement district funded by assessing property owners in exchange for services or support of programs designed to enhance vibrancy in the urban core.

The availability of economic cash incentives designed to attract potential businesses as well as investment in commercial and residential properties.

The progress of public improvements related to the development and image of the city, including Riverfront Commons, streetscape along Third and RiverCenter Boulevard and Sixth Street, Central Business District, Mainstrasse, Martin Luther King Drive and Latonia.

The climate for coordinated regional economic development and how it can be fostered and improved.

The sensitivity to the needs of those less fortunate and the agencies which serve them, while balancing those considerations with the need for strong economic vitality, studying how both can co-exist.

The continual improvement of the City’s financial health, dictated by strong growth in businesses, jobs and residents locating here.

CBC Executive Director Pat Frew says the agenda will be used as a guide for questions developed during the City Commission Candidate Forum luncheon scheduled for Thursday, October 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Madison Events Center.

The Mayoral Forum will be the following week, Thursday, October 13 at the same time and location. The Commission Forum is sponsored by the CBC and the Latonia Business Association (LBA). The Mayoral Forum is sponsored by CBC, LBA and the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

The forums will be moderated by WKRC-TV Local 12 Newsmakers host Dan Hurley, a Northern Kentucky native.

“The legislative agenda was developed by the CBC Advocacy Committee and approved unanimously by our Board of Directors,” said Frew. “Our business leaders felt it was important to re-emphasize what they consider to be key issues facing our City at a time when business growth in the Central Business District is gaining strong momentum.”

Eric Summe, President/CEO of Meet NKY and CBC Advocacy Committee Chair, added, “The City estimates that 80-85 percent of all its general fund revenue, property tax, occupational license fees, net profit tax and insurance premium tax comes from a business related source. As the largest business advocacy organization in the City the CBC hope City leaders and administrators pay close attention to directing resources and time to these issues.”

To register for either/both of the forums on October 6 or 13: www.cbcky.com or (859) 431-1500.
