Jerry Chappell of Worthville in Carroll County, a tobacco and beef cattle farmer, was having breakfast last Friday morning at his usual spot. His son called and told him he needed to finish up and head to Smoker Friendly in Owenton, where he buys his lottery tickets.
Chappell’s son had received a call from the store informing him that they’d seen his dad on surveillance video purchasing what they believed to be a winning Lucky for Life ticket. The store found out from lottery officials earlier that morning they’d sold a second prize ticket from the September 15th drawing.

Chappell went to the store to have his ticket checked, and when the clerk handed it back she told him he’d won. It wasn’t until he showed up at lottery headquarters yesterday afternoon that Chappell found out exactly what he’d won by matching the first five numbers on his $2 quick pick ticket.
“I’m taking it all in,” Chappell said after finding out just how much he’d won.
The winning numbers were: 1 – 4 – 16 – 28 – 29 Lucky Ball 10. The winning Lucky for Life ticket matched the first five numbers but not the Lucky Ball.
The games second prize is $25,000 a year for life, with a minimum payout of 20 years. The 74-year-old chose to take the cash option of $390,000.
Chappell, who has farmed all of his life, told lottery officials he’s relieved by his big win. “I’ve been in debt all of my life so it’ll be nice to not be for change,” he said.
Lucky for Life is a multi-state game sold in 19 different states and DC. Drawings are held on Mondays and Thursdays. The top prize for Lucky for Life is $1,000 a day for life.
