Sr. Catherine Mary Holtkamp, CDP died peacefully at Holy Family Home on July 27, 2018. She was a professed member of the Congregation of Divine Providence for 66 years. Born in Kalida, Ohio in 1921 to Edward and Mary Holtkamp, she made her first profession of vows in 1952 and professed her final vows in 1957. Sr. Catherine Mary
began her ministry of teaching in 1952 at St. Aloysius, Cincinnati and taught elementary and junior high in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia until 1980 when she began as the librarian at Our Lady of Providence Academy, Newport and then at Newport Central Catholic High School. She moved to St. Camillus Academy in 1985 and served there until 1991 when she was appointed the Director of the Peace & Justice Office for the Province. Her tireless advocacy efforts continued into her retirement in 2008 when she moved to Holy Family Home. Her fervor for bringing about justice motivated her to write endless letters, make numerous phone calls to legislators, and get the word out about the many concerns needing attention. Her gracious manner, gentle kindness and energy for justice, word puzzles and information about world and local events will long be remembered. She will be missed by her religious community, the Sisters of Divine Providence, and by her devoted brother, Edward, her sister, Esther Wenzel and her niece, Virginia Pizzurro who all visited her regularly. Her sister Margaret Pizzurro preceded her in death. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Immaculate Conception Chapel, Melbourne on Tuesday, July 31 at 4:30. Wake and Visitation will be at 3:30 with burial in convent cemetery following Mass. Memorials to the Congregation of Divine Providence, 5300 Saint Anne Drive, Melbourne, KY 41059.
