Gilbert H. Laycock , 100, of Fort Thomas, KY passed away on September 22, 2018 at his home in Ft. Thomas, KY. Gilbert was the beloved husband of Grace Laycock for 73 years, Grace preceded him in death in 2013. Gilbert is survived by his son Jeffery Laycock and daughters Nancy Lee Cryer (Donnie Cryer) and Lynn Robbins, and was preceded in death by daughter Bonnie Turner and adopted granddaughter Lorissa Cantrell. Gilbert is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Laura, Diane, Tom, Ann, Kathryn, Myranda, James, Jaime, Kristy, and Brittany; plus 19 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Gilbert was Newport High School’s 1937 valedictorian and a graduate of Morehead State Teachers College and Salmon P. Chase College of Law. He started Laycock Roofing Company in 1946 and helped his father John build houses during the post-WWII housing boom. Then, on is own, Gilbert built a number of apartment buildings, touching thousands of Northern Kentuckian’s lives through his caring ways as a landlord. Even in recent years Gilbert left his mark, giving advice and inspiring essays he wrote to everyone he came into contact with. As winner of the Alexandria Fair’s Baby Contest in 1919, Gilbert was a regular at the contest for the last decade, even this year, within days of turning 100, offering words of encouragement to parents and babies alike. He was, in a word, a character, a memorable character who inspired and changed many lives. Visitation will be Tuesday September 25, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM at Dobbling Funeral Home 106 S Ft. Thomas Ave. in Ft. Thomas. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
