Eugene “Gene” Haskamp of Ft. Wright died unexpectedly on November 24th. Born to Eugene and Ursula Haskamp in 1943, Gene grew up in Crescent Springs, Kentucky. He went to college at Thomas Moore for a year before joining the Army in 1966. He bravely fought for his country during the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne. He received many accolades for his service including two Bronze Stars for valor. Gene later returned to Thomas Moore to complete his Bachelors of Science. Through the years, Gene had many names, Sergeant in the Army, husband to his wife Betty, Dad to his children, but his most cherished name was “Papa” to his 12 grandchildren. Gene was an avid outdoorsman who loved boating, woodworking and spending time with his family. He was a very devout Catholic. The life and legacy Gene leaves behind will be deeply rooted for generations to come. Gene is preceded in death by both parents; sister Noel Hoppenjans and brothers, Dick, Thomas and Joseph Haskamp. He is survived by his loving wife Betty Haskamp; children Carey Kurtz-Taylor, Joseph Haskamp and Matthew (Katie) Haskamp; grandchildren, Eugene Jacob, Abigail, Ian, Caleb, Connor, Claire, Julianne, Emily, Jake, Jayden, Wesley and Ava; brothers, Gary and Paul Haskamp and sisters Rose Hitch, Mary Bishop and Rita Stanton. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 28th from 5PM – 8PM at Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Wednesday, November 29th at 11:30AM at St. Agnes Church in Ft. Wright with burial to follow at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery at 205 Eibeck Ln. Williamstown, KY.
