College basketball notebook: NewCath grad Weyer scores 23 points in 97-68 Bellarmine victory

Newport Central Catholic graduate Ben Weyer poured in 23 points Saturday night as Bellarmine rolled to a 97-68 win over Saginaw Valley State at Knights Hall in Louisville.

Weyer shot 9-for-13 from the field and also grabbed nine rebounds as Bellarmine improved to 2-0. The 6-foot-7 senior drained a trio of 3-pointers as the Knights gave head coach Scott Davenport his 346th career victory, tying Joe Reibel for the most wins in school history.

Alex Cook chipped in 20 points for Bellarmine, which used a 34-14 run to take 49-29 halftime lead. Dylan Penn added a career-high 17 points for the Knights, who are ranked No. 3 nationally in the NABC Division II preseason poll.

During his senior year at NewCath, Weyer averaged 21.6 points and 11.4 rebounds as the Thoroughbreds finished 30-5. He also scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in NewCath’s 52-47 win over top-ranked Covington Catholic in the 9th Region Tournament championship game.

Two games into this season, Weyer is averaging 20.0 points and 7.0 rebounds. He leads the Knights in 3-pointers with six and is shooting 60 percent from the field.

Bellarmine plays host to Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Knights Hall. Kentucky Wesleyan is coached by former Thomas More mentor Drew Cooper. Former Northern Kentucky University head coach Dave Bezold is one of Cooper’s assistants at Kentucky Wesleyan.

THOMAS MORE REMAINS PERFECT: Thomas More rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half on Friday to defeat Taylor (Ind.), 60-55, at Upland, Ind.

Ryan Batte scored 15 points to lead Thomas More, which improved to 4-0. Batte gave Thomas More its first lead of the game at 51-50 with a basket at the 5:55 mark.

Keegan Saben added 11 points, six assists and four rebounds for the Saints, who trailed 35-22 early in the second half. Taylor (2-1) led by as many as 15 points in the first half and still owned a 33-22 advantage at the break.

Thomas More plays at Marian (Ind.) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

NKU VISITS COASTAL CAROLINA: NKU plays at Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. The Norse are 1-1 after dropping a 71-56 decision at Missouri on Friday night.

Tyler Sharpe averages 18.5 points per game to lead NKU, while teammate Silas Adheke is shooting a blistering 84.6 percent from the field. Adheke, a 6-foot-8 junior, has converted 11 of 13 attempts from the floor and averages 11.5 points per contest.

Coastal Carolina is 1-1 going into Tuesday night. The Chanticleers posted a 102-66 win over Hampden-Sydney on Friday night. A year ago, the Norse knocked off the Chanticleers by an 89-83 score in Highland Heights.
