KBE accepting nominations for 2019 Priority Award, recognizes success in closing achievement gaps

The Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) is accepting nominations for its 2019 Priority Award, which will honor a Kentuckian whose work in the Commonwealth’s public schools and has successfully closed achievement gaps between student groups.

“One of the most notable education challenges Kentucky continues to face is achievement gap closure,” said KBE Chairman Hal Heiner. “Following the release of 2019 K-PREP test scores, we feel now is the time to honor someone who is ensuring all students in their realm of influence are achieving at high levels, regardless of their race or background.”

The award seeks to recognize a teacher, administrator, school board or council member, or business or community leader whose work has made significant gains in closing the achievement gap in his or her school or district.

Criteria for the award includes:

• Creation of innovative practices within a school or district that erase traditional barriers that may have stood in the way of student achievement;

• Demonstration of measurable success in student growth in a subgroup of students (i.e. low-income, students of color and students with special needs); and

• Demonstration of significant progress of assessment scores of school(s) affiliated with the nominee, particularly in mathematics and reading amongst all student groups.

Nominations are due by Nov. 15, and may be submitted online. The winner will be announced in February.
