Seventh Street in Covington blocked for John R. Green utility work, disruption should last a few days

Seventh Street between Bakewell and Main streets will be closed to through traffic for a few days beginning Thursday as site preparation for the John R. Green Lofts project accelerates momentum.

Workers with Atkins & Stang Inc. today filled in a trench built to house utilities underground along an alley leading to the John R. Green Lofts construction site.

As part of underground utility work along the north-south alley between those cross streets, crews with Atkins & Stang Inc. will begin cutting a trench through Seventh Street on Thursday, said Gary Bennett, a site superintendent for general contractor Turnbull-Wahlert Construction.

Bennett said the disruption would last three to four days. He said crews hoped to be able to use metal plates to reopen Seventh to at least one lane of traffic during evening hours, but for safety reasons couldn’t guarantee that it would be able to do so.

Turnbull-Wahlert has set up an email communications network to keep neighbors informed of such construction events.

The John R. Green project is a $38-million mixed-use development that will include renovation of the historic four-story John R. Green building into retail and office space and the construction of 177 apartments, additional retail and restaurant space, and a parking garage.

Demolition of a distribution building later added on to and wrapping around the historic building at 411 W. Sixth St. has already occurred.
