NKU’s Institute for Health Innovation launches Geek Your Health events with Campbell County Library

Northern Kentucky University’s Institute for Health Innovation (IHI) launches the Geek Your Health fitness classes, in partnership with the Campbell County Library. Events are themed around popular television shows, comics, films and video games– like Harry Potter and Spider Man.

Participants are encouraged to “let their geek flag fly” by wearing fandom themed workout gear and talking about their favorite fandoms before, during and after classes. Everyone will receive a themed workbook to encourage self-reflection and personal tracking, as well as a chance to earn points for fun prizes.

“Kentucky has the eighth highest adult obesity rate in the nation, so this is a larger health challenge our region needs to address. By incorporating pop culture, this will reach the people who may find fitness classes intimidating. We hope it inspires them to join us and help to improve our region’s fitness,” said Carolyn Noe, IHI program director.

The Institute for Health Innovation (IHI) is working to address many layers of health challenges in our communities. Through funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Humans Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration, the IHI is working in Owen County to address barriers to opioid use disorder services access. The IHI is also working with local K-12 students to prepare them as our region’s future health science workers. On-campus field trips provide students with real-life health care experiences and exposure to a wide variety of health career paths. The Teen Health Science Café program works with local high schools to provide an informal environment for students to meet real, local scientists and engineers.

Registration is required for any of the Geek Your Health events. Sign up for events at the Campbell County Library’s website.
