Ky. Association of Career Colleges and Schools names Rep. Adam Koenig Legislator of the Year

Kentucky State Rep. Adam Koenig, R-Erlanger, has been named the Kentucky Association of Career Colleges and Schools (KACCS) 2019 Legislator of the Year.

Rep. Koenig serves as chairman of the Kentucky House of Representatives Licensing, Occupations and Administrative Regulations Committee, which manages legislation governing the licensing and certification of professional occupations. The Legislator of the Year award was announced Friday, Aug. 9., during the KACCS annual conference, which was held at Sullivan University in Louisville.

Rep. Koenig represents the 69th House District, which covers portions of Kenton and Boone counties in Northern Kentucky.

“As Chair of the Licensing, Occupations and Administrative Regulations Committee, I know firsthand how critical our licensed professionals are to the Commonwealth, and how important the institutions that train them are,” Rep. Koenig said. “I believe it is state government’s role to work with the stakeholders to ensure that our laws provide appropriate guidance for those entering these fields, without creating a barrier for opportunity.”

Rep. Koenig’s committee has a major impact on KACCS graduates and schools. In the healthcare field alone, KACCS members train a wide range of professionals, from medical technicians to nurses to pharmacists, that require certification or licensure.

During the last several years there has been close scrutiny of how professions are regulated and a concern in certain quarters that current law creates barriers to entry into various fields. The recent United States Supreme Court Ruling against the North Carolina Board of Dentistry has also prompted most states to review how their licensure boards conduct business.

“In Kentucky, these discussions are ongoing, but Rep. Koenig has taken a leadership role in this area and has been a voice of moderation,” said Greg Brotzge, who manages government affairs for KACCS. ” He has solicited advice from all sides and fought against proposals that would have been heavy-handed. As a result, Kentucky has avoided some of the battles that have occurred in other states.

“For his efforts in this and other areas, KACCS is pleased to present the 2019 Legislator of the year award to Rep. Adam Koenig,” Brotzge said.

Rep. Koenig was elected to the Kentucky State House of Representatives in November, 2006. In addition to chairing the Licensing, Occupations and Administrative Regulations Committee, Rep. Koenig serves on the Local Government, Banking and Insurance, and Small Business and Information Technology committees. In addition, he serves on the Program Review and Investigations Committee, and the Budget Review Subcommittee on Personnel, Public Retirement and Finance.

Prior to his election, Rep. Koenig served eight years as Kenton County Commissioner and three years as Villa Hills City Councilman. He is also a Realtor with Coldwell Banker West Shell.
