Newport Independent Schools announced Patrick Belding has been named band director at Newport High School after a highly competitive interview process.

“Patrick was one of 12 candidates selected to interview for the position,” said Newport High School Principal Heather Orman. “The administration is excited about the wealth of experience and innovation he brings to the Newport High School community.”

Belding, who hails from Glasgow, Kentucky, will teach introductory music courses in middle school, choir, and high school band. He will also direct the Newport High School Marching Band and Pep Band and serve as music director for theater performances. He replaces former band director Ian Stokes.

Inspired to pursue music as a career by his middle-school music teacher, Belding hopes to build a strong music program in Newport and collaborate to create a positive music community that strives to achieve excellence.

“I want to ensure students are successful in music education, marching band, concert hall, and life,” said Belding. “With hard work, dedication from students, and support from their educators, we can create students who will be successful post-high school graduation in music or any other path they choose to pursue.”

As an undergraduate student at Eastern Kentucky University, Belding served four years as the Marching Colonels’ drum major. While completing his master’s degree, he studied piano and took vocal lessons. His primary instrument is the euphonium, and for the past two years, he’s conducted the university’s top band, the EKU Wind Ensemble.

In addition to his time with the Marching Colonels, Belding previously worked with the marching bands at Barren County and Madison Southern High Schools and brings a wealth of experience with competitive marching bands to the school’s music program.

“I’m excited to be working in the Newport High School community,” said Belding. “I am eager to learn what music influences exist around the community and what I can bring to the table for the music program.”

Belding is currently the assistant camp director for the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp.
