Friends of Covington accepting nominations for Beautification Awards through Aug. 16

The Friends of Covington is searching throughout the city to find worthy candidates for recognition in the organization’s 28th annual Beautification Awards competition.

Over the years, hundreds of home and business owners in every neighborhood have been honored by the organization for improving the exteriors of their properties and, by extension, making Covington a better place to live, work and play.

“The Beautification Awards as well as our annual Covington Award dinner have become signature events for the Friends of Covington and we always have a packed house for the beautification ceremony because we recognize winners in at least 18 neighborhoods,” said John Niland, president of the Friends of Covington, which was founded in 1987 with the express purpose of improving the image of Northern Kentucky’s largest city.

“When you have the award winners as well as their friends and family members in attendance the meeting room at the Behringer-Crawford fills up quickly,” Niland said.

The deadline for nominating a property this year is Friday, Aug. 16, and the nomination form is available online at “thefriendsofcovington.com” or in a paper copy that is available at Covington City Hall.

Over the years, the awards have developed into a tool that can be used to say “thanks” to people who have invested their time, energy and money into making their properties stand out in neighborhoods that stretch from the shore of the Ohio River to the southern-most tip of South Covington, Niland said.

As is always the case, property owners don’t have to own a million-dollar home or business location to receive recognition. Year after year the Friends of Covington has honored scores of people who did a spectacular job even though their budget was modest.

The Friends of Covington Beautification Awards Committee tours every neighborhood to make a determination about which homes should receive an award. The building as well as the landscaping around it are the two most important features that are evaluated by the committee.

Property owners may nominate their own properties for an award but people who are selling their home or business building are prohibited from doing so. The FOC does not want its awards used as part of a marketing campaign for people who are selling property.

The Beautification Awards will be presented at a reception on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park. The event, which begins at 5 p.m., is free and open to the public.
