NKU’s Hannah Edelen recommended as Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education candidate

Northern Kentucky University student Hannah Edelen has been recommended to serve as the student representative on Kentucky’s Committee on Postsecondary Education (CPE) for 2019-2020.

Kentucky’s governor appoints the council members, which is comprised of 13 citizen members, one faculty member and one student member.

The commissioner of education serves as an ex-officio member. A supporting state agency is attached to the governor’s office and run by the president, who is appointed by council membership.

CPE is charged with guiding the reform efforts envisioned by state policy leaders in the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997. CPE has multiple responsibilities to ensure a well-coordinated and efficient postsecondary and adult education system.

Edelen will graduate in 2020 with dual degrees in integrated studies and communications studies.

Her major focus areas are child abuse and educational attainment. She recently completed her term as the Student Government Association president and is involved with the Kappa Delta sorority and NKU’s Office of Government, Corporate and Foundation Engagement.

She is a 2019 Kentucky Henry Clay Scholar and is finishing her term as a member of the Board of Regents at NKU.

She is currently completing a capstone project by examining inequities in education across the Commonwealth. Through her research, she seeks to help all students access environments that are conducive to a quality education.

“Being nominated for this position was more than just what felt like an honor to me. It meant that others recognized the work that I have been doing in my community and across Kentucky with regard to access to higher education,” said Edelen. “It means that others believed that I could be a strong representative of what they wanted to see in the Commonwealth.”
