Update: Man charged in stabbing nine-year-old boy with machete in Covington Friday night


Police have arrested a Covington man in connection to the stabbing of a nine-year-old boy at Father Hanses Park Friday night.

Covington Police say Esteban Portugues, stabbed the boy with a machete at the park near West 11th Street and Hermes Avenue in Covington, at around 7 p.m. Friday

The youth has not been named, because he is a minor, but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Covington Police, took three suspects into custody Friday night and Portugues has been charged with Assault – 2nd Degree

Covington Police have released this updated statement regarding the incident:

At 2104 hrs, Covington Police Officers were dispatched to a stabbing that occurred at Father Hanses Park located at 11th Street and Hermes Avenue involving a juvenile victim.

Investigators determined the victim and several witnesses saw a short male Hispanic, later identified as Esteban Portugues, with a machete waving it around in the air and hitting it against the ground.

The other two male Hispanic’s had knives according to our victim and witnesses.

The three juveniles who were present (ages 9, 13 and 16) attempted to run away from the subjects. The 9 year old was not able to keep up with the older juveniles and Portugues was able to catch up to him.

Portugues struck the juvenile in the right shoulder with the machete causing a 3 inch deep by 2 inches long laceration in the victim’s back. The victim identified Portugues by description and stated he saw the suspect bring the machete down striking him.

Investigators obtained video that shows Portugues prior to the assault with the machete in his hand.

Officers conducted a search at 641 West 11th Street, the residence of two of the suspects. Officers located a machete in the room Portugues was staying in.

Portugues has been lodged in the Kenton County Detention Center and has been charged with Assault – 2nd Degree. He is being held without bond pending a court date.

No additional charges are expected to be filed at this time.
