Kentucky’s Commissioner of Agriculture didn’t know what to expect upon his visit Monday to the Herbmania and Urban Garden at Latonia Elementary School. Commissioner Ryan Quarles left in awe.
“I am beyond impressed with their ability to bring agriculture into the classroom,” Quarles said. “This school does it better than most of the rest. Hands down.”
Fifth-grade students gave Quarles a tour of their classroom garden, giving details of the plants and flowers that they grow. Students explained their roles with the project, such as watering, making sure PH levels are correct and delivering orders. The students also grow vegetables and flowers in an outside garden.
Teacher Bob Runyan introduced the students to the concept nearly seven years ago. The business has grown much since students first started selling plants and flowers to teachers. Now sales have expanded to local restaurants and businesses.
“I am proud of you all,’’ said Quarles who gave the students “Kentucky Proud” stickers, designated for products grown in Kentucky.
