Boone County’s new head football coach is building his staff

In his first two weeks as the new head coach of the Boone County football program, Bryson Warner has been putting together a staff to help him get the Rebels ready for the 2019 season.

Bryson Warner

Warner, a former all-state player at Boone County, was hired to rebuild a program that compiled a 4-39 record over the last four years under former head coach Marty Steele.

The last time the Rebels had a wining season was 2011 when the team finished 9-5 after a loss in the semifinals of the Class 6A playoffs.

A statewide realignment will put Boone County in Class 5A for the next four seasons. The Rebels will compete in a district that includes Conner, Cooper, Covington Catholic and Highlands.

This is Warner’s second head coaching job. He was in charge of the Ryle football program for 11 seasons from 2003 to 2013. His teams compiled a 73-58 record that included a 10-11 record in the playoffs. Ryle was Class 4A state runner-up in 2006 and made it to the semifinals in 2010.

Warner spent the last two years as assistant coach at Covington Catholic. Both of those teams made it to the Class 5A state final and won the title in 2017.

NewCath football player is last in line of five Kelly brothers

Newport Central Catholic senior Kyle Kelly, the last of five brothers to play football for the Thoroughbreds, signed a letter of intent with Ohio University last week.

Kyle Kelly

After making his varsity debut as a sophomore running back, Kelly was a two-way starter at linebacker and running back the last two seasons. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior was recruited to play linebacker in college.

During his sophomore and junior seasons, Kelly rushed for 1,983 yards, scored 32 touchdowns and made 88 tackles for the Thoroughbreds. But an ankle injury limited him to seven games during his senior season and he ended up with career totals of 2,410 yards, 35 touchdowns and more than 120 tackles.

Two of Kelly’s older brothers – Chris and Mark – are among the top 10 in career rushing yardage for NewCath. He did surpass another brother, Ben, on the team’s list of all-time leading rushers..

Their other brother, Shawn, played wide receiver for the Thoroughbreds. Their father and two uncles also played in the NewCath football program.

Standout players in three sports going into CovCath Hall of Fame

One of three former athletes to be inducted into the Covington Catholic Hall of Fame on Wednesday is 1990 graduate David McGee, who played on two state champion football teams and still holds a school track record in the 800 run.

The other athletes to be inducted are Steve Hanson, a state qualifier in seven different track events, and Eric Severson, a .500 hitter in baseball during his senior season.

John Michels, coach of the CovCath junior varsity baseball team for more than 20 years, and Sheila Roedig, a long-time member of the booster organization, will also be added to the Hall of Fame during Wednesday’s ceremony at The Gardens of Park Hills event center next to the school.

A video presentation about the history of the CovCath Hall of Fame will run during a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner. Inductions are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online at www.covcath.org or by calling the school (859-491-2247). For more information, contact Tony Bacigalupo at tbacigalupo@covcath.org.
