Newport History Museum presents ‘Black Sports Legends of Newport High School’ on MLK Day


Newport History Museum @ The Southgate Street School will present “Black Sports Legends of Newport High School” on Monday from noon to 5 p.m. in recognition of Martin Luther King Day.

“Black Sports Legends of Newport High School” prepared by Daylin Garland will be on display for viewing said Scott Clark, historic preservation office and Newport History Museum executive director.

This pictorial and newspaper clipping exhibit showcases the Black Sports Legends of Newport Honorees from the past. 
 
The Museum’s mission is to honor the students and educators who stepped through the school by engaging with and celebrating the diverse history of the community. This is a place where the voices and stories of Newport’s unique past come alive. 
 
Historical Marker #2071 in Newport commemorates the former Southgate Street School.  It was the only African American educational institution in Campbell County.
 
This event is free and open to the public.
