Applications open today for Early Assurance Program for UK College of Medicine-NKU campus

Northern Kentucky University students interested in medical school can now apply for the Early Assurance Program (EAP) at the UK College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus. The applications will open on December 1 for sophomores who are entering their spring semester.

The EAP program is designed to create a clear pathway for students to medical school. Once accepted, these students are assured admission to the UK College of Medicine- Northern Kentucky Campus after they complete the program requirements and graduate.

“The EAP program provides guidance and motivation during their final years of undergrad,” said Dr. Erin Strome, director of NKU’s Pre-medical Pathways Program. “The course load is difficult for pre-med students – it takes a lot of focus. In addition to maintaining a high GPA and MCAT scores, they also have community service requirements, shadowing hours, and research opportunities needed to strengthen their application to medical school. We are here to reduce that burden, keep them on track, and make it possible for aspiring students to accomplish their dreams.”

For the 2020 medical school class at UK’s Northern Kentucky Campus, NKU filled the five seats available through the EAP Program. All five students are women majoring in Biological Sciences or Chemistry.

“I chose the EAP program because the opportunity to stay located in my hometown and receive a degree from an accredited school like UK was unbeatable,” said Ashley Childress, NKU EAP student. “As someone who didn’t always plan on going to medical school, the program has helped guide me through the many steps and obstacles involved with being a pre-med student that I didn’t even know existed. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity or more excited about my future as an MD.”

“Early assurance seats are provided to a host campus, so it can draw from students in the area. These talented young women from our first EAP class will attend medical school here on NKU’s campus with clinical training at St. Elizabeth. After graduation, they are much more likely to practice here in the region. The goal is to address physician shortages around the state, and that is the reason the UK College of Medicine created the campuses outside of Lexington,” said Dr. Strome.

EAP application window will be open until Feb. 1, 2019. For more information or to apply, visit the EAP website.
