Boone County Sheriff at scene of tractor-trailer accident at I-275/Mineola Pike; driver injured

Boone County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched early this morning to eastbound I-275 at the Mineola Pike interchange for a FedEx tractor-trailer that had gone off the right side of the roadway and over an embankment, turning over and crushing the cab.

On scene, deputies located the driver, Leroy Alexander, 44 of Lebanon, Indiana, trapped in the truck hanging upside down where he remained for approximately one hour, forty-five minutes before being extricated.

Alexander, who never lost consciousness, was flown to University Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio via Air Care.

Early indications are that Alexander was eastbound on I-275 in the right lane when he veered right and struck a broken down, unoccupied 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer parked in the emergency lane. He continued on across the bottom of the Mineola Pike entrance ramp and then over the embankment. He was reported to have general merchandise in his two trailers.

Cleanup is expected to be extensive as the fuel tanks will need to be siphoned before uprighting the rig.

First responders will open lanes for travel as the situation dictates.
