Joe Beard, a former basketball coach, athletic director and principal at Ludlow High School, will be a posthumous inductee into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday at Villa Hills Civic Club. The ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. is free and open to the public.

Joe Beard

Beard, who passed away last spring, was head coach of the Ludlow boys basketball program for 11 seasons. His teams compiled a 162-118 record that included nine consecutive seasons. The 2003-04 team was runner-up in the 9th Region All “A” Classic, won the Division III conference title and posted the program’s best-ever 25-5 record.

One of the other five inductees will be Thomas Schrage, who played on the Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball team when he was 33 years old. Schrage enlisted in the Army after high school and served in the Vietnam War. After he was discharged in 1970, he resumed his basketball career playing in high-level amateur leagues before joining the NKU team for the 1979-80 season.

The Hall of Fame will also be adding former Simon Kenton coach Tim Moore, Falmouth basketball player James Hammond and Ludlow graduates Roger Dunhoft and Kent Marcum, who earned varsity letters in three sports.

Moore, who was named Kentucky Teacher of the Year in 1991, coached cross country and softball at Simon Kenton. He has also been the high school’s public address announcer at athletic events for 36 years.

Monthly inductions into the Hall of Fame will continue until April. More information will be made available on the NKSHOF website.

I would like to support them.
