Alexandria golfer carries state sign, leads Team Kentucky into stadium at Special Olympics USA


Special Olympics Kentucky athlete Jude Zilliox of Alexandria had the honor of carrying the state sign and leading Team Kentucky into Husky Stadium on the University of Washington campus Sunday during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games.

Zilliox won a vote of Team Kentucky coaches for the honor. He will play golf at the Games, with competition beginning on Monday. This is Zilliox’s second trip to the Special Olympics USA Games.

He also competed in golf at the 2006 Games in Ames, Iowa.

“The 2018 Special Olympics USA Games will showcase the abilities of athletes with intellectual disabilities, promote the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sport, and celebrate the transformative power of Special Olympics,” Beth Knox, President and CEO, 2018 Special Olympics USA Games, said in a statement.

The 2018 USA Games opened Sunday and run through July 6. In all, 45 Kentucky athletes are among the 4,000 athletes from all 50 states and the District of Columbia competing at the Games.
