Boone County schools, sheriff collaborate to add School Resource Officers to all elementary schools

Superintendent Randy Poe has announced that Sheriff Michael Helmig is working cooperatively with the Boone County Schools to add School Resource Officers to the district’s elementary schools.

That will bring the total number of School Resource Officers in Boone County Schools to 25.

In light of the Florida and Marshall County school tragedies, Superintendent Poe reached out to the sheriff’s office for help with a temporary effort to assure that schools are safe.

“Our students deserve a safe learning environment and their parents deserve to know we will do what is necessary to protect their children,” said.

“In an email to his deputies, Sheriff Helmig asked each to “dig deep (to commit the time) and help me protect our youngest school-age children” explaining each will need to dedicate “additional time to get the schedule filled.”

For years Sheriff Helmig and the Boone County Board of Education have provided security with School Resource Officers at the Boone County public high schools and middle schools with school resource officers.

This is simply an expansion of that program through the end of the school year until a permanent solution is worked out.

These additional SRO’s will start at our 14 elementary school campuses on Monday, February 26.

They will work Monday through Friday during school hours.

Costs will be split between the Sheriff’s Department and the Boone County Board of Education.

The Boone County Sheriff recently announced that six Boone County School students had been arrested for making threats at school.
