Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 provides updates on Northern Kentucky highway projects, tips

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 would like the public to be aware of the following conditions and/or operations that are being reported for highways in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties.  Motorists should be aware of possible delays or lane closures on the following projects:

BOONE COUNTY

  • KY 20 (Petersburg Road) – A pipe replacement project is underway on KY 20 between Bullitsburg Church Road and KY 237.  Lane closures will be in place at times so motorists should exercise caution when travelling the work zone.  Slow traffic and possible delays should be expected.
  • KY 2852 (Riddles Run Road) – A resurfacing project is almost complete on KY 2852 between KY 338 and KY 536.  Lane closures will be in place at times so motorists should exercise caution when travelling the work zone.  Slow traffic and possible delays should be expected.
  • KY 536 (Mt Zion Road) – Work continues on the KY 536 corridor in Boone County extending from Old Union Road to I-75.  Motorists should exercise caution when travelling the work zone; the posted speed limit is 35 MPH.  Slow traffic and possible delays should be expected.
  • KY 237 (North Bend Road) – Crews are finishing up a project on KY 237 between Limaburg Road and Litton Lane.  Lane closures will be in place at times so motorists should exercise caution when travelling the work zone.  Slow traffic and possible delays should be expected.

CAMPBELL COUNTY

  • KY 10 (Flagg Springs Pike) 4.4 – 13.6 mile-marker – A highway safety improvement project is scheduled to begin soon that will improve shoulders from KY 1997 to the Pendleton County line. The work will include multiple pipe extensions, shoulder widening, tree trimming and asphalt surface.  Motorist should watch for lane closures with flaggers on each end of the work zone to control traffic during working hours.  Expect minor delays.  Work is weather pending.  This project will be complete by May 2018.
  • Johns Hill Road (KY 2345) Connector to Three Mile Road (KY 2238) – Construction is in progress on a new connector road between Johns Hill Road (KY 2345) and Three Mile Road (KY 2238).  This new connector road will be adjacent to the NKU campus.  Construction will take place in several phases, which will require various lane closures, lane shifts and detours.  New traffic patterns are in place on KY 2238 (Three Mile Road) and the I-275 Exit 76 ramp.  KY 2238 (Three Mile Road) will be reduced to one lane south of the I-275 ramp.  Traffic exiting I-275 onto SB Three Mile Road will no longer have a free flow movement when making a right turn onto Three Mile Road.  Motorists will need to stop at Three Mile Road before turning right or left. Sunset Drive in Highland Heights is open. The roundabout on Three Mile Road will be fully functional except for the new roadway to NKU which is still under construction.
  • KY 9 Expansion – Newport – South Section – Construction is nearing completion on the section between Lowell Street between 9th Street and KY 9 (12th Street).  This section is open, but drivers should still be alert in the work zone as crews finish project.
  • KY 9 Expansion – Newport – North Section – Construction continues on a new alignment between 5th Street and the Taylor Southgate Bridge.   Access to all residents and businesses will remain open to traffic.

New traffic pattern locations:

  1. 4th Street (KY 8 westbound) between Central Avenue and the Veterans Memorial Bridge is closed. Vehicles travelling west into Covington from 4th Street should follow the signed detour to south on Central Avenue (KY 9), then west on 5th Street through the roundabout and onto the Veterans Memorial Bridge (KY 8).  Pedestrians, please be sure to use the sidewalks and sidewalk crossings in the roundabout.
  2. York St. is now open to southbound traffic only from the roundabout.  There are no left turns permitted from 4th Street to York St. northbound.  3rd St. will remain closed between Columbia Ave and York St.  Monmouth Street will remain a 2-way traffic between 3rd St and 4th St.

KENTON COUNTY

  • Exit 83 Ramp of I-275 WB – A bridge maintenance project on the Exit 83 ramp of I-275 westbound over US 25 (Dixie Highway) will take place Monday, December 4, starting at midnight through Tuesday, December 5, until 2 p.m. During this time, Exit 83 will be closed to traffic.  The on ramp from KY 1303 (Turkeyfoot Road) to I-275 westbound will remain open but drivers should watch for workers and equipment in the work zone. Drivers wanting to exit at US 25 (Dixie Highway) will be detoured on to Exit 82 and should continue on KY 1303 (Turkeyfoot Road) to US 25 (Dixie Highway). All work is weather permitting.
  • Brent Spence Bridge – I-71/I-75 Southbound and Northbound – Although the 24/7 multi-lane closures on the Brent Spence Bridge has ended, but maintenance work will continue through December 8. Periodic lane closures will be necessary to complete work on the bridge. Weather permitting, the following traffic impacts will take place this week as routine maintenance work continues on the Brent Spence Bridge:

Information about upcoming lane closures will be posted on BrentSpence2017.org and on the project’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.

The KYTC offers the following tips for motorists when they approach a work zone:

  1. Expect the unexpected.
  2. Slow down.
  3. Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  4. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the construction workers and equipment.
  5. Pay attention to the signs.
  6. Obey road crew flaggers.
  7. Stay alert and minimize distractions.
  8. Keep up with the traffic flow.
  9. Navigate traffic with GoKY or via Waze on your smartphone!
  10. You can get District 6 road construction updates here.
  11. Knowing where the construction zones are prior to the trip can minimize frustration and delays.
  12. Be patient and stay calm.

Remember construction and maintenance activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies, and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet appreciates your patience during the construction process.

Motorists are urged to use caution in work areas, and to be alert for flaggers, workers, and equipment which may block a portion of the roadway, and other items of concern in work zones.  Motorists are asked to pay careful attention to warning signs alerting them of the roadwork and obey work zone speed limits where applicable.
