Covington Police say a man who was involved in what appears to be a burglary Thursday, shot himself after fleeing when officers surrounded the home.

The man, whose name has not been released, was being observed by the homeowner through a remote security system. The man fled the East Sixth Street residence after police arrived, and officers gave chase.

Officers say the man, who was suspected of carrying a handgun, jumped over a wall and fell into a mulch bed. Officers heard a shot after the man fell and found the suspect suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

He was transferred to University Medical Center in Cincinnati, where he was pronounced dead.

Covington Police have not yet determined if the shooting was accidental. The Department released the following statement regarding the incident:

On October 19, 2017 at approximately 1645 Hours the Covington Police responded to 124 East 6th Street for a report of a burglary in progress. The call came from the home owner who was watching the burglary remotely through his home security system. Officers arrived to the location and began to surround the house when one officer observed the suspect inside the house. The suspect exited the side door of the residence and fled from the scene. Officers gave chase and during the chase they observed the suspect carrying a handgun. The suspect fled across the street to Mother of God Church where he jumped over short wall and fell in to a mulch bed. When the suspect fell, one shot was heard by the pursuing officer. As officers approached, they found the suspect suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

It has been determined that NO officers from the Covington Police Department fired any shots during this incident and that the shot fired came from the handgun that the suspect was carrying. The suspect was transported by ambulance to UC where he was later pronounced deceased by medical staff.

The motive for the burglary is still under investigation. Detectives are also investigating if the gunshot was self-inflicted or accidental. The name of the suspect will not be released until next of kin has been notified.
