Printer:Faire comes to Covington to celebrate the variety of print making process on June 17

On Saturday, June 17, The Hellmann Creative Commons (321 W. 12th Street, Covington, KY) will be abuzz with artists for Printer:Faire, a celebration of printmaking featuring several local printmakers. The event, which is the result of a Creative Community Grant from The Center for Great Neighborhoods (The Center), will highlight a variety of print making processes and will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

“There are so many ways to make a print, and so many uses for printmaking besides just hanging on walls,” said Jennifer Baldwin, organizer of Printer:Faire. “Steamroller printing is one of the craziest things I’ve seen, and I want to share it with the community. Everyone is encouraged to bring clothing, canvas totes, and more to be printed on using the steamroller. This is one way faire goers can bring a piece of the day home with them.”

Faire goers will have the opportunity to visit booths of local print makers to purchase prints and participate in print making workshops using techniques like letterpress, silkscreen, and relief print making. Attendees will also enjoy a demonstration of steamroller printing, organized by a team of students from Northern Kentucky University. The students have created several large plates that will print an image on muslin by rolling over them with a steamroller. Students from Holmes Middle School and Dixie Heights High School have gotten involved as well and made smaller pieces that will be printed by the steamroller.

Adding to the festivities, the event will feature live music from Twig & Leaf at 12:30pm and Acarya at 4pm. Food will be available for purchase from Fire Lab and smoothies from Valet Coffee.

For those interested in learning more about printmaking prior to the Faire, Art Machine, the organizer is holding several weekend workshops from 12-2pm at the Hellmann Creative Center. On Saturday, June 3, they’ll demonstrate stencil and silkscreen printing, and on Saturday, June 10 attendees will linocut and do linocut preparation for the steam roller printmaking during the Faire on Saturday, June 17.
