Southbank Partners, Ludlow to hold groundbreaking ceremony for Riverfront Commons trail Friday

Southbank Partners and the City of Ludlow will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the Riverfront Commons walking and biking trail in Ludlow.

It will take place on Friday at 10:30 a.m. on the river behind City Memorial Park in Ludlow.

Riverfront Commons is an 11.5-mile uninterrupted walking, running, and biking trail that links Ludlow with Northern Kentucky’s other five river cities –Covington, Newport, Bellevue, Dayton, and Fort Thomas. When complete, Riverfront Commons will traverse about 2.2 miles of Ludlow’s riverfront. Two sections of the trail — just about a mile in length — will be constructed in 2017.

One section will run along the river parallel to the Ludlow City Park and baseball fields, which are located at the southwest corner of Elm Street and Adela Avenue. Another section will run along the river from Locus Street to the Ludlow High School football field.

Ultimately, the trail will connect bikers and hikers from the Ohio River south through the old Ludlow Lagoon property and a city park to the Devou Backcountry Trails and other trails in Covington’s Devou Park.

The trail also will have a nodes – or access points — into the
downtown business district, where it will connect with the Ludlow Yard project, a mixed-use development planned on Ky. 8 near the railroad, and the Ludlow Town Square project, a community space next to the Ludlow City Building that will feature a public gathering space for festivals and community events and a train-viewing platform.

Speakers include:

· Jack Moreland, Southbank Partners
· Mayor Ken Wynn, City of Ludlow
· Robert Koehler, OKI
· Mike Yeager, City of Covington

To get there take a right off of Route 8 and turn down Adela Avenue. The park will be on the left-hand side. Parking will be available behind the park.

In case of rain, the ceremony will take place in Ludlow City Hall located at 51 Elm St.

Riverfront Commons is an 11.5-mile uninterrupted trail that links Northern Kentucky’s six river cities – Covington, Newport, Bellevue, Dayton, and Fort Thomas.

The trail features paths — some as wide as 15 to 20 feet and others atop the riverside levees that will be smaller in width – that will accommodate walkers, joggers, and bikers as well as areas where people can launch kayaks and canoes into the river.

A series of access points from the trail will provide easy linkage to residential neighborhoods and business, entertainment, and historic districts in these cities.
