Trip to the Aronoff Center helps Newport High Students prepare for performance

In preparation for their upcoming production of “Annie”, the Newport High School (NHS) Performing Arts program recently took the 35 students who are in the cast and crew to the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati to see “White Christmas.”

For the past four years, the NHS Performing Arts program has taken the group participating in their upcoming play to a show at the Aronoff Center to experience live musical theater.

Susan Whitehead a volunteer with the NHS drama program said the experience has really benefited the students.
“I have attended all of the Aronoff productions with the students,” said Susan Whitehead, volunteer with NHS. “Over these years I have seen a solid core of actors, singers, set designers, builders, painters and techies develop. I have witnessed a transformation in the interest and enjoyment by the students. “

Whitehead admits she was concerned that the production of White Christmas would not hold the interest of the students, but says she could not have been more surprised.

“All the students sat forward in their seats taking it all in and discussed the storyline during intermission,” Whitehead said. “One student even asked me how she could purchase tickets on her own to see more of the Aronoff season. I believe bringing the performing arts to the school system is having a profound effect on many of the students.”
